Fast-growing startup Akasa Air is India’s third carrier to firm an aircraft order at the Paris Air Show, following in the footsteps of the blockbuster deals announced by IndiGo and Air India for a combined 1,040 jets.

Akasa finalized its order for four additional Boeing 737 MAX 8s, taking the carrier’s order book to 76 aircraft. The airline has 19 MAX 8s in service on routes to 16 destinations across India.

Founder and CEO Vinay Dube, previously of Jet Airways, said the aircraft would be delivered over the next four years and support Akasa’s rapid domestic expansion.

Akasa has 53 of the higher capacity MAX 8-200 variant on order.

Mumbai-based Akasa was granted an air operator’s certificate by the Indian government in July 2022, paving the way for its first flights the following month. The LCC took delivery of its first MAX in June 2022 and expects to take between 12 and 14 annually through 2027.

The Akasa order follows IndiGo’s “landmark” purchase of 500 Airbus A320 family aircraft on June 19, taking the number of Airbus aircraft on order by the LCC to nearly 1,000. Air India then finalized separate large orders with Airbus and Boeing the following day, covering 250 and 290 aircraft respectively.
